Trajan's Gate

Trajan's Gate
Famous mountain pass in Bulgaria (q.v.) about three days march from Serdica (q.v.), where Samuel of Bulgaria defeated Basil II (qq.v.) in August of 986. Basil II was retreating from his unsuccessful siege of Serdica when the Bulgars surprised his army in the pass, gaining total victory. Basil II's defeat allowed Samuel to continue to expand into Byzantine territory, and it prompted Bardas Skleros (q.v.) to revolt. Not until the end of the 10th century was Basil II again able to turn his attention to conquering Bulgaria.
